Happiness is a new bloom

Pink Hibiscus

Happiness is a new bloom. Especially a specimen that did not bloom the previous year. Disappointment and unmet gardening expectations build for an impatient wait until the next year.

But then the right conditions occur at the right time. Like ample rainfall and the addition of fertilizer lead to an unexpected bounty of blossoms.

My long wait for blooms on a hisbiscus plant did not materialize last year. But this year the flowers are non-stop. Hibiscus bloom lasts only one day. But the large, saucer sized bloom steals the show in the flower bed. A new favorite blossom that offers a new bloom every day. A great reward following a long wait.

Another plant that finally bloomed was the yellow, orange canna. Threatening to pull them up if they didn’t bloom this year, I decided to apply some nitrogen. Thankfully nutrients met the plants need and the blossoms appeared. Success.

Gardening is a yearly experiment

This year, as I the plan for next spring, the focus is what already works. Adding more of the top bloomers that are heat and drought tolerant.

What works in my flower bed are purple cone flowers, iris, daffodils, and lavender to name a few. Use of local wildflowers like evening primrose, milk weed, coreopsis moon beam work well and require minimal care.

Maybe my plan will help me to work smarter, not harder. Then the addition of fertilizer and compost can enhance the plants that already perform.

My gardening goal is a kaleidoscope of perennial blooms that say welcome home after a long day at work.

What are some of your favorite blooms?

Scripture for Today

“And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?” (Matthew 6:27-30 NLT).

God Whisper

Beloved, come to me this day and abide in my ever-loving care. As the Master Gardener, I created the flowers in the field. And I can care and tend for each concern in this day. Rest in Me, My beloved, and bloom your best. You are treasured and protected. I am your strength for the journey.
