Lent

Nothing says preparation like the Season of Lent. Many Christians observe this forty day season on the Christian calendar that starts with Ash Wednesday and ends on Saturday before Easter (some calendars are different). Sundays are not included in the forty days. The 40 days represent the 40 days that Jesus spent in the wilderness prior to His earthly ministry.

Christians may use this time to prepare their hearts through prayer, fasting and repentance. Christians use this season as a time introspection and drawing closer to God. Historically Lent was a time for new Christians to prepare for baptism and to identify with Christ and His death on the cross.

How can I prepare my heart for the Savior who has done so much for me through all of His love, grace and sacrifice on the cross. I come before the God who takes away the sin of the world. I come asking for Him to reveal and remove the things in me that are not pleasing in His sight. Yes, Lent is a sobering season of reflection, repentance and ultimately spiritual renewal through Christ’s ultimate sacrifice on the Cross.

Facing my own character defects is much like getting out of my warm, cozy house in freezing temperatures to clean out my neglected garden. Getting started is often the hardest part. I’m surprised by new green growth hidden beneath winter debris. The tender growth waiting to burgeon and blossom with the sun’s warmth.

God is faithful to restore the garden of my heart as I surrender what needs removing. He who began a good work in me with be faithful to complete it.

Scripture for Today

Psalm 51:10-12 New International Version (NIV)

Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

God’s Whisper

My Beloved, as you come to me in the Garden of My Presence know that I am continually tending your heart with loving kindness. As you surrender your heart and will, you yield to my will, and I am able to give you a softened heart for others. The season of preparation is necessary to accomplish work in My Kingdom and fruit bearing for others in need of My touch.

Prayer for You Today

Father, I pray for a new heart. For myself and your church. Create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us. Amen
