Gratitude is the gift to attitude. The habit of gratitude is a gift you give to yourself. And a nice way to start the new year.
Several years ago, I was introduced to the simple power of gratitude. The daily exercise of a grateful heart changed my attitude, then my life.
My younger self tended to focus on all the negatives that bombarded me. God knows the negatives in life often outweigh the good. Or so it seems if that’s your mind set. All my negative vibes fed into depression.
My journey to a grateful attitude began with a gratitude list. The daily assignment was to find ten things I was grateful for.
Some days were easier than others. But sometimes my list included the simplest, basic necessities. Another reminder: things could always be worse.
- God loves me
- My family
- A close friend
- Food to eat
- Clothing
- Shelter
- A job
And sometimes I couldn’t finish my list of ten good items.
Then some days my list was more detailed.
Over time my habit of gratitude changed the general focus of my life from the negatives to all the goodness God provides on a daily basis.
His blessings and grace surround me every day. His mercy is new every day.
I still take an antidepressant, but life is good. And not so much because my circumstances changed, but because I did.
Focus is the key. God is good, all the time. Sometimes I need to look closer at the beauty of the day, or the sunrise or sunset.
What’s on your gratitude list today? If you need some help read the following Psalm.
Always ask for help if you are depressed. Be sure you contact your physician if symptoms of sadness or depression linger.
Scripture for Today
I give you thanks, O Lord, with all my heart; I will sing your praises before the gods. I bow before your holy Temple as I worship. I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness; for your promises are backed by all the honor of your name. As soon as I pray, you answer me; you encourage me by giving me strength.
Prayer for You Today
Love One,
I lift you up to the God who knows you and cares for you. I ask that you would replace heaviness with hope and joy. Fill your servant with hope for today and tomorrow. Give them the faith that you will meet all of their needs. God bless you with a heart of gratitude. Amen.
