The benefits of friendship

The benefits of friendship are priceless. Friendships even contribute to improved health and longevity. Hanging out with a buddy and sharing the pressures of life provide a buffer that bolsters emotional and physical wellbeing. Individuals with close friends are less likely to exhibit depression and are generally more satisfied with life.

Likewise, those who suffer from isolation and loneliness are higher risk for premature death, including high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke.

But even casual connections contribute to a feeling of connectedness and diminished feelings of loneliness. Interacting with acquaintances throughout the week at work or church provide opportunity for meaningful socialization and stimulation we require as human beings. Even talking to strangers can give us a mental boost.

A Friend

A friend provides support, emotional intimacy and loyalty in an otherwise harsh world.

Add to that the amazing truth that Jesus provides for us in John 15:14-15:

“You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me.”

The God of creation and author of our salvation gives us the precious gift of dwelling in His friendship. Jesus distinguishes his followers as friends. All that the Father speaks to Him, He shares with us.

Jesus is our closest friend and defines the gift of friendship like no other friend. He always listens to us and answers all of our prayers. He is loyal to us, even if we fail Him. And He loves us like no other.

Scripture for Today

“The man of too many friends, chosen indiscriminately, will be broken in pieces and come to ruin,
But there is a true, loving friend who is reliable and sticks closer than a brother”
(Proverbs 18:24 AMPC).
