Sometimes the simple things in life are the best and most memorable. And often free.

Previous generations have lived in simpler times with less technological advancements. My dad, born in 1910, (no I’m not 100! LOL) grew up in the depression. Occasionally he would whittle my brother and I a windmill toy. And he could fold an origami boat that would float. My brother and I spent hours making it float down an irrigation ditch full of water while he tended the irrigation of the pear orchard.

My dad also spoke of losing his ice skates. Yes, back in the day the ponds froze thick enough to skate on here in North Eastern Oklahoma. But don’t try that now. Certainly our northern friends can enjoy such activities. To top that off, my dad was champion at playing checkers. I don’t think I ever beat my dad. He was a fierce competitor.

My mom also grew up in the depression. She and her sister delivered home made bread, baked by her mother, to nearby neighborhoods that had larger houses and better incomes.

2020 and COVID 19

has ushered in staying close to home and very possibly simplifying life. Many of us enjoy more home cooking and less eating out, watching movies at home vs venturing out to the theater.

Since my back surgery simplify has meant putting two puzzles together and walking outside three or four times a day. Weather permitting. My walks give me a gander of a different spring bloom daily. Or how about a deer track that looks like a cow’s hoof. Only we don’t have cows. I’m pretty sure it’s a deer print. We seen a few monster bucks around occasionally. But those old bucks stay pretty secluded. Kind of like Bambi’s father.

One thing is certain as well: the simplicity of God and the story of salvation. Simple enough for a child to understand. Yes, Jesus loves me, the Bible tells me so.

My husband has always said, “God is simple, but people complicate the message.

Jesus loves us so much He died on the cross to save us from sin and reconcile us to God. He loves all of us unconditionally. He loves you just the way we are.

As Easter approaches open your heart to God. Enjoy His simple loving kindness toward you, who He created.

What kind of simple things are you enjoying?

Prayer for Today

Father, we come before you today praising you for the spring that unfolds before our eyes. Your beautiful creation for us to behold. Help us to enjoy the simple things in our lives. Thank you for friends, flowers the sunshine that warms us. Open our eyes to the beauty of Your Creation and Your Infinite love for us. In Jesus name, Amen.

Scripture for Today

13 But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.14 For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us. 15 He did this by ending the system of law with its commandments and regulations.

He made peace between Jews and Gentiles by creating in himself one new people from the two groups. 16 Together as one body, Christ reconciled both groups to God by means of his death on the cross, and our hostility toward each other was put to death.17 He brought this Good News of peace to you Gentiles who were far away from him, and peace to the Jews who were near. 18 Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us.19 So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. (Ephesian 2:13 NLT).
