Psalm 18 is a song David sang to God after the Lord delivered him from his enemies and the hand of Saul.
The psalm is full of adoration, prayer and gratitude. But most important it is the answered prayer of David who cried out to Almighty God. God shows up with powerful, divine weapons. He answers David and delivers him from all of his enemies. The Psalm bursts with God faithfulness and protection to David and all Jesus followers.
The first verses of the Psalm sing praise to God and His powerful attributes.
Psalm 18:1-3
“I love You fervently and devotedly, O Lord, my Strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my keen and firm strength in whom I will trust and take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower. I will call upon the Lord, who is to be praised; so, shall I be saved from my enemies” (Psalm 18:1-3 AMPC).
David boldly declares his love and devotion to God who is His strength. And the Lord is his rock. David hid from his enemies among the rocks and caves in Judah’s wilderness. The area provided a natural fortress or high tower, another image of God’s protection. Jehovah is also His refuge of safety and David’s trusted shield from the enemy.
The Horn of Salvation
Animal horns were used to symbolize power, strength and military victory. And in Luke 1:68-70, we see Jesus as the horn of our salvation.
“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited and redeemed His people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David, as He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, who have been since the world began” (Luke 1:68-70 NKJV).
My personal prayer time often starts with Psalm 18:1-3. My praise mirrors the psalmist’s song as I declare my love and devotion to Jesus, my strength.
God is a firm foundation on which we stand and can live our lives. He is our fortress. Can anything penetrate God’s protective wall that surrounds us and keeps us?
Then, more praise leads into David’s cry for help, (stay tuned for the next blog) “I will call upon the Lord who is to be praised. So shall I be saved from my enemies.
We can trust God who goes before us and hears all of our prayers. Amen.
