Gratitude in Relationships

Gratitude in and for relationships and the people God places in your life can help avert resentments and possibly even arguments. And in certain instances, stay on a positive course and avoid a breakup or even a divorce.

Several years ago, when I first learned about gratitude and it’s priceless benefits, I was experiencing difficulty with someone I loved very much. I was focused on fault finding and negative behavior that did not meet up with my expectations.

A friend suggested doing a gratitude list concerning my loved one on a daily basis. Initially resentment clouded my list. But slowly, when the numerous negatives rose their ugly head, I began to find a positive. My list of positives grew.

Much to my surprised younger self, the negatives started to fade along with all my irritation. I lost the urge to start the fruitless blame game. Most of the time the issues were miniscule. And really, how big a deal was it when my feelings of displeasure rose and demanded my full attention (or so I thought)?

My gratitude list grew. I let go of the negatives. A simple attitude of gratitude toward my loved one smoothed out some of the bumps and improved our relationship.

On the other hand, good boundaries come into play to avert unacceptable behavior.

Then there is always God’s grace and forgiveness that requires application as well.

Gratitude in relationships, along with other good tools, prayer and God’s help are always a benefit.

Blessings in all of your relationships.

God’s Whisper

My Beloved, come and abide.

Let go of the bitterness you hold toward others. The walls you construct for protection only isolate you from those you love. Your hurting heart will heal as you trust me to be your strong tower, protector and shield.

Love, the Father

Scripture for Today

“Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things, center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart. The things which you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things in daily life, and the God who is the source of peace and well-being will be with you” (Phil 4:8 AMP).

Prayer for You Today

Child of God, I ask that God would grant you a grateful heart. May you cherish the people God has put in your life, and help you to extend love, grace and acceptance. And help you find the good and the benefits they bring as they enrich your life. Amen.
