Today I am grateful for that friendly face and genuine smile in random encounters. That certain checker at the grocery store that always offers a nice greeting, or someone who smiles as they pass in the long halls at the hospital where I work.

So often the hurry of the day, the rush to get home, or the ennui of routine tasks can take over. The constant barrage of, I need to do this or that diminishes our joy. Maybe that nonchalant greeting offered by one person causes others to respond likewise.

Yet a tiny gesture to reach out beyond the drone of that next task may stir up extra energy or even that joy that got choked out by hurry and worry.

A Friendly Smile

All that to say, I’m grateful for the checker at the grocery store who always seems to offer a sincere, “How are you today?” On one particular day the checker engaged in a quick conversation, “What do you get to do the rest of the day?”

Surprised, I replied, “I’m a writer, and I get to go home and write.”

Looking at the card with interest, “Wonderful, I hope you have a good day of writing.”

Getting out of the next customer’s way, I replied, “I hope you have a good rest of the day.”

The brief encounter ended with smiles as the checker focused on the next person.

Then, that Sunday in Sunday School we discussed serving God. Kindness became the focus word. And kindness is one of the fruits of the spirit. One person mentioned that he asked God for opportunities to share kindnesses.

Yet we live in a world where being careful and not talking to strangers means we are always on guard, and possibly unfriendly or reluctant to reach out.

But with the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can move beyond that self-protective barrier. We can trust Him to lead and direct us to those who need help and even simple kindnesses. And maybe just a smile.

I am grateful for the simple exchange of pleasantries that add grace and joy to ordinary days.

Scripture for Today

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me”” (Isaiah 6:8 AMP).

Prayer for You Today

Beloved of God,

May He give you joy to overflowing for those who need hope and kindness. May we open our hearts to those in need of God’s touch. Amen.
