walking on a trial

Exercise for the caregiver. You may be thinking, snore, bore, I’ve already heard that. Where would I find the time? But finding five to ten minutes in your already too busy day, may be just what you need.

Exercise for the Caregiver

The benefits of exercise are well documented. Physical movement makes our bodies feel better and can help clear our mind of stress. Endorphins, or feel good hormones are released in the brain during exercise. Those feel good hormones can keep depression at bay. You may experience an improved attitude and sleep better. Simple changes can provide worthwhile rewards.

Keep it simple. The exercise does not have to be strenuous and does not have to include the gym, unless of coarse that’s your primary choice of exercise.

  • Go for a short walk down the street or around the block
  • Walk briskly to increase your heart rate
  • Try yoga
  • Go to the library and check out an exercise CD

Just for a moment, let go of the responsibility and worry surrounding the continuous care you give. The act of leaving for a short time provides time to gather your thoughts and may provide some much needed serenity.

You may find that you enjoy the exercise so much that you are adding more minutes to your activity.

That’s exactly what happen to me when my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. Being in my twenties I was still able to jog. I started off slowly. Over eight months I had increased my miles and ran in a 10 k run.The endorphins relieved stress and helped limit depression.

Getting Started
  • Check with your doctor before you start
  • Find an activity you like
  • Start slowly
  • Stay hydrated

In conclusion, small efforts toward self-care can add up.

Bible Verse

Hebrews 12:1-2 New International Version (NIV)
12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
