Don’t you love a good memory?

Sometimes events happen that leave a powerful memory etched on the mind. Some good, some bad. Certain triggers take us back to that moment frozen in time.

Recently during my workday, I took the opportunity to stop at a still pristine area in north eastern Oklahoma. A beautiful creek flows through a narrow valley of rolling hills and cliffs.

Opening my car windows beside the clear water creek the sound of the water met my ears. Water tumbling over this rock then another. A continual flow from upstream to an unknown destination. The sound distinct. Crisp. Comforting. Inviting.

Paradise Springs

Gently mesmerized, my mind immediately went back to church camp. Another serene landscape in the hills near Littlerock, California. Complete with a stream, scented pines, pool, and tennis courts.

Our youth group had Paradise Springs to ourselves.

Our minister, shepherd of a small church had a heart for children. He faithfully took our youth group to church camp yearly. Yes, we played tennis, swam, and had fun. Included in our day was Bible study, praise and worship and a campfire in the evening.

But my favorite memory required a morning quiet time. We scattered, each finding an isolated spot. My choice was a rock by the stream. Peaceful and quiet with the sound of the breeze rustling pine needles topped off by the water gently rolling downstream, inviting my youthful heart into the presence of God.

The divine sounds and scenery of the camp drew me to the Holy Spirit’s beacon one evening by the campfire. That evening I gave my heart to Jesus, lover of my soul.

The experiences of church camp have led to a lifelong morning quiet time with God, seeking his divine direction and peace for the new day.

Yes, a most pleasant memory, and a wonderful break in my workday. A touch of self-care on a busy day.

I’m already looking forward to my next day by the creek.

Are you taking time to care for yourself during your busy work day?

Have you asked Jesus into your heart? If not, you don’t have to wait until your are by a creek. You can do that now. Just ask Him.

Scripture for Today

They shall abundantly utter the memory of Thy great goodness, and shall sing of Thy righteousness.” (Psalm 145:7 KJ21).

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there among you whom, if his son ask for bread, will give him a stone. Or if he ask for a fish, will give him a serpent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father who is in Heaven give good things to them that ask Him?” (Mathew 7:11 KJ21).

  1. The first time I felt the stirring of the Holy Spirit was during a “quiet time” at Canyon Camp, a Methodist church camp in western OK. I had believed in God since a young child, but that experience changed me. Thanks for sharing and for bringing that wonderful memory back to me!
