Sometimes we need to let go of unrealistic expectations. Often high expectations lead to guilt and disappointment when not met.
Certainly recovery from back surgery is slower than expected. Yes, the surprising detail is that rest is a requisite. But then again I need to walk frequently. Energy levels continue to be low. Turns out back surgery is not for sissies.
A trip to the grocery store wears me out. And so does pool therapy. Other times I’m just plain tired.
Prior to physical therapy I was walking up to a mile three to four times a day. Not now. Too tired to walk on a therapy day.
Need to Rest
But my blog is late and no idea what to write.
Seems letting go of those expectations of productivity is a must. When will things return to normal? (Sounds like a COVID-19 question). We’re all waiting for something. Right?
So patience with self may be the key. Replacing the push for productivity with rest. Putting another puzzle together. Knitting. Allowing my back to heal and get stronger.
Yes. It’s okay to expect better days ahead. Small gains every day. The best part there is no back pain! What a blessing!
God often provides rest for us in many ways. This is certainly one of those times for me.
Letting go of shoulds, what ifs and coulds is a good thing along with all those unrealistic expectations of self that only lead to guilt. I can choose to let go and enjoy God’s provision of rest and healing.
Are there some areas that you need to replace unrealistic high expectations with patience or self-acceptance?
Scripture for Today
“Return unto thy rest, O my soul, for the Lord hath dealt bountifully with thee.” (Psalm 116:7, KJ21).
Prayer for Today
Father, we come before you today. Help us to let go of the self-pressure and unrealistic expectations of ourselves and others. If we are needing rest, help us to find your rest. If we are needing strength, we pray for strength. Lord you are faithful to give us what we need when we need it. We thank you and praise you for your divine provision. Amen.
